Week 1- Courtney
- In order to make the school lunches healthier I created a menu with healthier food choices. I changed whites, to whole grain and wheat. Rather than fried foods, I used grilled and/or baked foods. I changed all dips/dressings to low fat or light, and changed the drink choices to drinks with no preservatives. I used fresh vegetables and fruits to replace chips and cookies. By doing all of this I think that it will help to reduce the amount of calories each kid takes in during lunch.

Week 2- Marnie
-The menu I have created will have a much better effect on the health of student, because the foods I chose are a lot healthier than the foods currently served at most schools. The foods have more nutrients and the whole wheat ingredients have more protein and fiber. The turkey burgers are a healthy and great tasting substitution for the fat filled hamburgers made with beef.

Week 3- Tyler
-My menu would benefit the school because it has low calories and is healthy for the body. It can benefit the students because it can reduce the risk of heart disease and obesity. Both the students and the teachers would enjoy these types of foods because it would satisfy their hunger and their desire to stay healthy.

Week 4- Llamar
-Some people eat food because it taste good although it is very unhealthy for them. With my menu for the week the meals that i chose would taste good but it was also very good for the health. Students and the staff would enjoy a good meal not even knowing how healthy it was. The meals would also be a decent portion.

Letter to School

Hello Upper Merion High School, we're excited to introduce our new healthier way of eating lunch. We call ourselves "Eating in Season". Our daily lunch menu takes away all of the food items heavy in fats, cholesterol, sugars, and calories, and replaces them with whole, "in season" foods that will make each child in your school feel better throughout the day. The foods we introduce in our menu will help children take in less calories and eat a much healthier lunch on a daily basis at school.

The foods that your school offers are mostly processed, frozen foods, high in sugar, calories, and cholesterol. With these foods being distributed to the children, their bodies aren't as healthy as they should and very well could be. The portions of the healthy foods you do offer such as salad, fruit, and vegetables are too small and the portions of the unhealthy foods you offer are way too big. The drinks that you offer through vending machines are way too high in sugar, sugar is one of the main components of the drink. The snacks, though they are baked, are still filled with sodium, and fats that aren't good for a growing body.

"Eating in Season" would like to change this schools lunch menu by reducing the amount of calories that each student will take in during lunch. In order to accomplish this we would like to replace all white flour with whole wheat and whole grains. We will replace any simple carbohydrates with complex carbohydrates. Rather than buying frozen foods pre-made, we'd like to introduce fresh produce, and fresh meat to this school. Instead of frying these foods we'd like for the kitchen to grill or bake all meat. By doing this you greatly reduce the amount of calories and fat in each serving. We plan on taking every sugary wawa drink out of the vending machine and replacing them with 100% fruit juices and water. Milk will still be offered, but 2%. Our menu offers snacks that the children can still enjoy, but in a much healthier form. Although our budget may be a little more costly, starting at $4.00 for a full meal, it will be well worth it for the benefit of each students health.

Like stated before, the menu will be drastically changed for the better. The lower calories in our fresh meats such as low fat turkeys, and grilled white chicken breasts will lower the intake of each child's calories. The lunches that "Eating in Season" will provide, explain our name. We will only feed the students fresh produce and fresh meats that are in season. One way we do this is by replacing whites, with whole wheats and whole grains. Notice that on our menu we replace the usual wrap with a whole wheat wrap, and the usual pasta with whole wheat pasta. This is much better for the students health and will drastically reduce their daily calorie intake. Another thing were especially proud to introduce on our menu is our fresh low fat meats. All of the chicken served is 100% white meat, and will be grilled or baked, never fried. Any lunch meats such as the turkey, is low fat lunch meat. It's especially important to take a look at the new healthy choices a child can make for a snack. Face it, no student wants to eat their meal without a snack. Well, rather than giving the students chips and cookies we replaced all vending machine snacks with fresh fruits in season. There is also the choice of fresh veggies with low fat dips and whole wheat cracker with low fat spreads. Healthier foods will be bigger in portion than the foods on the less healthy side as well.

Choosing "Eating in Season" for your new lunch menu will benefit you greatly. We can guarantee that this new menu will help the kids to feel more energized throughout their day. It is now that you can make the switch to a healthier lifestyle and an allover healthier school. By switching to "Eating in Season's" healthy choice menu, not only are you changing the health of your school, but your changing the health of your students. Students can then take these new healthy choices home with them, and change the health of their own community.
